Maria played college soccer for the California Lutheran University Regals for the 2001 and 2002 seasons, where she received the CLU Scholar-Athlete Award both seasons. Maria was a starting outside midfielder for the Regals and helped the team to a 2nd place SCIAC finish in the 2001 season. Maria was one of the team’s top point leaders and was named the 2001 Regal Athlete Role Model. In 2002, the Regals re-captured the SCIAC league title, recording their 11th season as league champions. Maria was named SCIAC Athlete of the Week, as she led the Regals in scoring and assists. She was also named to the NSCAA All-West team in 2002. In 2003, Maria traveled to Seattle, Washington where she competed with more than 100 women from all over the western region of the United States, as a member of the USASA Region IV select team.

Maria joined Apex Soccer Club as the trainer for the bronze level U14 Girls ’88 team in 2003. Over the next three years she continued to train the team, coaching them from a U14 bronze level team to a U18 gold level team.
