GU9 Champions Copa Real Nike Invitational
The Girls U9 Apex SC G99 team got off to a fast start in the Copa Real Nike Invitational, defeating Santa Monica United FC, 4-0 and Bakersfield Gunners, 7-0. Seven of the ten girls on the team scored at least one goal, starting with a monstrous shot by Sophie Yanez from about 25 yards out against SMU. Hailey Silverstein completed a hat trick in the second game against the Gunners by scoring two long distance shots from sweeper. Birttany Yeager sparked that games second half scoring binge by slotting a tough shot between the keeper and the near post. Great goalkeeping by Alyssa Reza, Gigi Pagani, Angelica (Jelly) Stuczynski, and Hailey Silverstein secured the two shutouts.
The second day of the tournament proved to be a greater test of the Apex team’s abilities and character. The first game of the day was against the host team and eventual runners-up of the tournament Real So Cal. Apex was down early, but a huge goal by Sofia Vinas tied up the score. After the equalizing goal it was a back-and-forth battle that could have gone either way. When the dust settled, the game ended in a draw with a final score of 1-1.
In the last game of the tournament the Apex SC girls set a new team record, scoring a goal in the first 20 seconds of the game. This was no indication of how the rest of the game was going to be played. Santa Barbara made it a fierce game, and tied the game early in the second half. The Apex girls remained confident and aggressive throughout , and finally, with three minutes left in the game, Sofia found the back of the net to give the Apex SC G99 team the 2-1 victory and the Championship title. Nicole Hunter and Leah Timmerman were instrumental at the back, giving up only two goals in four games. Sophie Smurthwaite gave the girls three solid halves in goal, securing the necessary points to win the tournament.
This was the girls’ first tournament Championship title and their second top two finish out of five played as a team. The Players, Coach and Families were all very proud, and they look forward to many more fun and exciting games ahead.
